Military Supercomputer Sets Record

An American military supercomputer, assembled from components originally designed for video game machines, has reached a long-sought-after computing milestone by processing more than 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second. The new machine is more than twice as fast as the previous fastest supercomputer, the I.B.M. BlueGene/L, which is based at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The new $133 million supercomputer, called Roadrunner in a reference to the state bird of New Mexico, was devised and built by engineers and scientists at I.B.M. and Los Alamos National Laboratory, based in Los Alamos, N.M. It will be used principally to solve classified military problems to ensure that the nation’s stockpile of nuclear weapons will continue to work correctly as they age. The Roadrunner will simulate the behavior of the weapons in the first fraction of a second during an explosion.Source

Asus has two Geforce 9700M gaming notebooks

Asus was showing off two new gaming notebooks and it looks like the company is starting to catch on in terms of design. Gone is most of the tacky suff from the previous gaming notebooks, and we're now looking at a couple of really sturdy models for the serious gamer.Starting with the G50V, this might be the more exciting of the two, simply because it has a 15.6in WXGA 3D display. The great news is that you don't need any glasses and you don't have to squint or focus at some strange point in the distance for it to work, although you do have to look quite straight into the display for best effect. The 3D display can be switched on or off, although the demo machine was an early sample, so it was done via an external switch, but Asus is working on a software solution to solve this problem. If this isn't enough to get you sold, how about the hardware specifications? You're looking at a Geforce 9700M GT graphics card with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and HDMI, Intel's upcoming Centrino 2 platform with the mobile PM45 chipset and an option for WiMAX. On top of this you get support for up to 4GB of DDR2 800MHz memory, two 320GB SATA drives and a sturdier keyboard designed for gamers.Source

SMK's Wireless Input Pen lets you scribble like a 5 year old

SMK Corp just introduced a supposed world's first "Wireless Input Pen." Catchy. The prototype pen features a 3-axis accelerometer and Bluetooth allowing you to write to, and interact with a display at a distance of up to 10-meters. It works without any of that specially formatted paper required by most Bluetooth pens -- just a bit of flittering the device about in mid-air. That is, until your arm gets tired and you question the whole point.Source

JetBlue's LiveTV unit to snatch up Verizon's Airfone network

Nary a week after JetBlue expanded its in-flight internet services on BetaBlue comes news that the airline's LiveTV unit will be picking up Verizon's Airfone network. As you can glean, the purchase is being made in order to further "develop in-flight email and internet services," and while no purchase price was disclosed by either outfit, we are told that LiveTV will receive "100 air-to-ground US communications towers and Airfone's corporate and government aviation clients on January 1st." That's nice and all, but can't we get something out of this sooner?Source

JVC announces MPEG-2 / H.264 dual codec LSI chip

As the camera / camcorder world continues to embrace video sharing sites, it's no surprise to see this little critter emerge from the labs of JVC-Victor. The pictured dual codec LSI chip handles both MPEG-2 and H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC formats, theoretically cutting out the painful encode process from YouTube uploads. Granted, most of the technobabble behind the thing is lost in machine translation, but we do get the idea that it'll start showing up in the outfit's Everio line shortly.Source

A.R.E.S. Telepresence Tank gets kill commands via WiFi

As if you had any reason to believe that killbots weren't multiplying by the minute, here's yet another case to strike fear in your heart. Project A.R.E.S. was designed with a few key goals in mind: to replace human soldiers and to demonstrate that a weapons system could be controlled wirelessly / remotely. The designers also set out to "provide a form of feedback so that the user could navigate the robot without actually being present," and the current version has been equipped with a semi-automatic turret and a wireless camera to give the controller a good view of the surroundings. We don't get the idea that this bugger has enlisted just yet (boot camp is a chore, you know), but be sure and check out the video of it prancing about after the jump.Source

HP's Blackbird 002 gets exclusive configuration for retail launch

Just because you haven't seen one on every street corner doesn't mean that HP's Blackbird 002 gaming rig hasn't been around the block a time or two. Still, those of you who haven't found the nerve (or spare change) to pull the trigger can look forward to being tempted even more this summer. Starting soon, the Blackbird 002 will be available in an exclusive configuration at Amazon, NewEgg and select Best Buy, Circuit City, J&R and Micro Center locations. This launch marks the first time the unit has sashayed into B&M outlets, and packed within will be an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 processor, dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT graphics cards, 4GB of Corsair Dominator RAM, 500GB SATA drive, 7.1-channel onboard HD audio, a 15-in-1 multicard reader, 900-watt power supply and an nForce SLI motherboard with RAID support. Said config will run customers $3,299, and a list of locations from which to buy it will be made available on June 29th.Source

Nokia's E-series to ship in Q3 alongside N96

You already knew Nokia's evolutionary N96 was all set to be shipped in the fall, but it's about time Nokia came clean with the release information on its leaked-out-everywhere E-series. While Anssi Vanjoki, senior executive vice president of Nokia Markets, didn't specify model numbers, it's widely assumed that the E66 and E71 handsets are included when he states that "a group of E-series multimedia computers" will be brought to market in Q3. No mention of a price or expected launch regions, but at least you've a quarter to circle in your date book, yeah?Source
